Two Simple Ways to Make Sea Moss Gel Last Longer

Our sea moss is 100% natural with zero additives or preservatives; this means we do not add anything to it to make it last longer. The sea salt from the ocean actually acts as a natural preservative, which helps dry sea moss last long. Sea moss in its dry state is good for at least a year, some people even say it doesn't expire at all.

However, once you soak sea moss in water you’ve essentially brought it back to life. At this point how you store your sea moss is very important, because it will determine how long it will be good for. It is recommended you store your gel in an airtight jar in the back of your refrigerator and it should be good for about three weeks.

Now if you're anything like me and always seem to make too much gel, and end up having to throw some away because it's gone bad before you can finish it, we have a couple of practical solutions for you!

Lime Juice

Adding freshly squeezed lime juice to your sea moss will prolong its shelf life. This may be something you already do with other foods in your fridge like avocados, guacamole and fresh fruit smoothies so they don’t oxidize (brown as fast) and last longer. Well the same thing goes for sea moss gel. Lime juice is the perfect natural preservative because it contains ascorbic and citric acid, which are antioxidants and antibacterial.

I have gotten an extra 1-2 weeks out of my gel just by adding freshly squeezed lime juice while it's soaking in water. You’ll notice on our packaging we include directions on how to make sea moss gel and we suggest adding lime juice in the process.

Freezing

Freezing sea moss gel will increase its shelf-life by months! The best way to do this is by making sea moss cubes using an ice cube tray. This is a favorite because of its versatility, convenience and longevity. Anytime you make yourself a smoothie you can just pop a couple of cubes in your blender. Even when you're cooking and want to add it in your soup or stew you can just throw in a few cubes to your liking, the possibilities are really endless with this method.

You can even add the lime juice in conjunction with freezing to make moss cubes and add this to just about anything you can think of without worrying about expiration.

Try these out next time you make moss gel and let us know how it goes!
