A Beginners Guide to Sea Moss: What You Need to Know!

The first time I heard about sea moss was in 2010 when I hosted my cousin from St. Lucia for two years, while he studied here in Canada. Every month he would receive packages of sea moss from my aunt back home. Sea moss is very popular in the Caribbean and something people consume regularly. At the time I didn't pay any attention to it or ask him questions about it. All I knew was that my cousin was consuming this stuff on a daily basis, little did I know I had what is referred to as liquid gold in my kitchen.

It wasn't until 2017 while on my quest for more mindful, healthier, eating habits I came across a video lecture of Dr. Sebi. In the lecture he was speaking about the importance of this superfood called sea moss and all the nutrients and benefits it carries. If you aren’t familiar with the term superfood, these are food items carry very high nutritional values loaded with essential vitamins and minerals.
As the years went by more people started to become health conscious and started making real lifestyle changes (especially with the rising rates of diseases like cancer).  Today sea moss being promoted by celebrities such as the late Nipsey Hussle, Big Boi, Kim Kardashian, Erykah Badu and Hailey Bieber to name a few.

Sea moss has easily become a staple in my household, whether it's used as a dietary supplement, for general health upkeep, or healing diseases. This superfood is the way to go to assist you in achieving and maintaining your health goals.

Primarily found and grown in warm water climates, sea moss is normally harvested along the Atlantic coast from places like South America, the Caribbean, Asia and parts of Africa. Sea moss is a type of algae that’s similar to seaweed. It varies in colour from gold, purple and green, but the most common colour you'd typically find in stores is gold.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE SEA MOSS IN YOUR DIET?

What’s great about sea moss is that it's so versatile, you can easily incorporate it into your everyday diet in just about anything you eat or drink.

You can get everything from sea moss gels to sea moss powder or capsules. Having these options makes the transition easy for newbies venturing into the sea moss world.

WHAT CAN I ADD SEAMOSS TO?

Gold sea moss has a mild ocean-like taste and that taste is stronger with the purple and green moss. Until you've acquired a taste for it, it’s best to start using it in small amounts.

When making sea moss gel from scratch in terms of the dried plant, adding a lime in preparation will also diminish the sea like odor and taste. When prepared properly it should have little to no taste and it will take on the taste of whatever it is mixed with.

While doing some research and speaking to chefs, I've learnt it became popular as a thickener for sauces, smoothies, milk and even in custard desserts. It is a  healthier replacement for gelatin and it's vegan friendly.

Here are some ideas of what you can add sea moss to:

Smoothies
Dairy-free elixirs
Blended soups
One-pot meals and stews
Salad dressings
Homemade nut/seed milk
Coffee
Raw desserts and much more
